LIVING REVOLUTION

By Ana Wijnen, women's secretary CONAICOP, The Netherlands

Last January, from the 9th to the 11th, in the capital of the homeland of Bolivar, to whom my homeland owes its name, took place, once again, an unforgettable event: the International Anti-Fascist Festival, with a unique programme due to the Possession of the constitutional and democratically elected President, Nicolás Maduro Moros, an event we were privileged to attend, because of its historical and international value.

Once again, Caracas was the host of the Anti-Fascist International, where more than two thousand representatives from around 120 countries from all over the world converged.

Words fall short to describe the experience of this second visit (my first one was in September last year), because of the high flow of revolutionary energies together, the confirmation that the network of conscious, educated and dignified intellectuals is growing, and all this generates that hope that I often thought was almost lost, a hope that Latin America and with it all the nations of the world oppressed by colonialism, are being reborn, are beginning to forge their own way, at a firm and determined pace, with a clear example of the courage of the Venezuelan people. A hard way with adversities and gigantic adversaries who believe they control the world by force of blockades, sanctions and a lot of media manipulation.

For those of us who are not from the country where we live, it can be difficult to hold a flag that does not represent us, even more so when the contrast is, fortunately, so big. Fortune for not fitting into a country that oppresses, that colonises and dispossesses of their lands, their goods, their families and even their right to life to other similar human beings, in another latitude of the planet. Europe, which is the mother of fascism, the mother of the monster of the North that divides, destroys and spreads hatred towards those who confront it, the USA, the favourite son, has financed wars, plunder, genocide, as it is doing right now with our brother people of Palestine. This contrast is exacerbated in an atmosphere like the one we saw and felt in Caracas, with a government that is in solidarity with and constantly denounces the genocide and unjust plundering that the State of Israel has been doing for many decades.

Somehow, having lived in Europe had strengthened my original identity, that of my pre-colonial ancestors, and brotherhood with the nations of the world from whom everything has been taken away, everything except dignity. Latin America is, however, the mother of cultures twinned with each other and with nature, the mother of the wind, the rain, the sun and the earth, from which our food is born.

So are Africa and Asia, which share that colonial past of usurpation and dispossession, but despite everything we have not given up, our revolutionary spirit springs from our wounds.

Returning to the meeting, everything described above is not strange to anyone who was present, it is not a hypothetical approximation, it is a certainty, it is the materialisation of what we call hope, it is experiencing first hand the transformation of that prolonged hope into concrete actions.

It was no coincidence that Venezuela was the host country for this meeting. Bolivar had always had it clear, as did Martí in Cuba, who with visionary wisdom warned of the danger of the North and always knew that the only way to confront it would be through the union of the peoples.

Throughout history, the revolutionary idea of unity and social resistance has been taken up on different occasions: the Cuban revolution is living testimony to this successful achievement; however, Che's intention to expand the revolution throughout the rest of our continent did not have the same success, the outcome of which is well known to us.

Today, Venezuela is a clear example of that resistance and social union transformed into the Bolivarian Revolution, which is why I consider that this meeting is, for the nations of the world, an invitation to contemplate the achievement in a real scenario, contrary to what the official media disseminate.

The diversity of activities and proposals in the Festival programme has provided us with knowledge; listening to the speeches of revolutionary political leaders and even the visit of the President Nicolás Maduro, has lifted our revolutionary spirit. The working panels have called us to action from our immediate field of work: women, men, young people, native peoples, artists, social leaders and many more, to focus on concrete aspects such as social movements in their various manifestations, work in communities, education, information, art, etc. Participating in the International Congress of Communications at LAUICOM (The International University of Communications) has oriented us to confront the media war and to fight from technological knowledge, language and media expressions against all the manipulative and destructive disinformation that the empire dominates.

The cultural activities in the beautiful city of Caracas have been a source of inspiration for us to find our own expression through history, music and poetry.

Finally, the links established with our comrades and friends from all over the world will strengthen the bases of our struggle, creating collaborative, supportive, humane networks, based on trust, brotherhood and mutual respect, which together with the instruments provided will build the necessary bridges in the struggle, which starts from ourselves, expands and makes it the struggle of all, for all and with all, because we are no longer alone.

Therefore, comrades of the world, it is up to us to accept this invitation and to assume the commitment to give continuity to this project, not to let this meeting remain a beautiful memory, but a present of struggle for our future, a future that is dignified, strong and free. We must assume the responsibility of spreading the revolutionary spirit in concrete and lucid actions. We must develop ourselves so that from knowledge we can transmit our realities, positively and consciously influence our living environment, expand our network, together manage projects and set them in action. It is not an easy way, but it is our way.

Hasta la victoria, siempre. ¡Venceremos!
